Prenatal Yoga
Prenatal Yoga is one of the safest forms of exercise to practice during pregnancy.
The relaxation skills, strength and flexibility developed during prenatal yoga classes
can help to minimise some discomforts of pregnancy and help to tone, stretch and
strengthen the body in preparation for labour as well as helping to deepen the connection
with your baby. It can also relieve stress, boost energy and balance the hormones
promoting emotional wellbeing as well as aiding relaxation and restful sleep which
brings benefits to both mother and baby.
Postnatal yoga
Having a baby is a magical time, it can however be a very demanding time for mother
and child. It is a time when the mother needs support to adapt to the change; physical,
mental, emotional and spiritual.
The aim of post natal yoga is to provide a nurturing practice for mothers and their
babies, through relaxation techniques, and postures to stabilise the pelvis, restore
the uterus, abdomen and pelvic floor muscles, prevent stress incontinence and womb
prolapse, build core strength again and relieve shoulder, neck and back discomfort
which are all common postnatally.
It is important to rest, the first 6 weeks after birth are a time for bonding with
the baby and for the mother to recover. By the end of the first eight weeks of the
post natal period, women should be ready to return to their regular practice, but
it is important to listen to what the body is ready to do. Women with a yoga practise
prior to pregancy should be careful and not rush back into their usual yoga practise.
